Doug Henry: Best New Ideas

November 3 - December 21, 2019

Opening Reception:

Sunday, November 3, 2-5 pm

"Get your side-hustle on!" is a slogan associated with Über. But it applies as well to great swaths of the new economy where the older norm of steady employment has given way to an unpredictable world of contingent "gigs," performed by those formerly known as "workers" but who have since been re-branded, "entrepreneurs." Los Angeles artist Doug Henry doesn't exactly document this epic shift so much as he participates in it. Exploits it, even. Titled, Best New Ideas, this is the artist's first show at As Is. Here he employs the new "forms," so to speak, of global capitalism--including the remote jobs platform Fivrr, and payment system technologies like Venmo--to produce "content"--eight videos and an interactive print / electronic publication--that reflects quite humorously, if also somewhat darkly, back on its own economic and social conditions of possibility.
